  • In Omaha Hi lo Poker, if a player opts for a buy-in amount of $100 then a big bet for this amount would be $4 whereas a small amount would be $2 and the ante being the 10 percent of big bet will be 50 cents. Similarly on the contrary if a recommended gradually decreases the recommended buy-in amount to $20 then his big bet will also bring a variation of $1 and the small bet will turn out to be 50 cents making the ante equal to 10 cents. This buy-ins description keeps on working on the same mechanism which would have been much more simplified for you now.
  • The hand used in Texas holdem is free from the set rules of combination. A player can incorporate any combinations of the community cards and the down cards to make their hands. Whereas, contrary to this a player of Omaha hi lo poker is bound to make the combinations between community and hole cards in such a way that there should be two hole cards whereas three down cards in order to make their hands. The number of cards in Omaha hi lo poker should be no less or no more than this fixed ratio of 2:3.
  • The numbers of hole cards which are received in Texas Hold’em are two. These cards are kept face down and are also known as the down cards. The number of these down cards or hole cards in Omaha hi lo is four rather than two.
  • Lastly the difference which distinguishes between Texas holdem and Omaha hi lo poker to a great extent is the fact that the winning criteria’s in both the games are very different from each other. In Texas holdem the highest ranking poker card player wins the game and the pot beating the other opponents whereas in Omaha hi lo poker the splitting of the pot is followed by highest as well as the lowest hand.

Like every other game, poker has its own glossary and to reach the optimal level of a player you must have a bird’s eye view of these terms:

  • The Deal
  • The Turn
  • The Flop
  • The River
  • The Blinds
  • Call
  • Fold
  • Raise
  • Check

Initiating with the most basic terms can be an interesting and easy task for a beginner who has just entered the world of poker. This basic terminology will not only polish your skills on the board but will also enable to undergo any poker articles incorporating these basic terms.

The Deal: The poker game begins when the cards have been distributed on the board to every player by the dealer. The deal is basically a pair of initial cards which are distributed among each player on the deck and are put into play.

The Flop: After the first two cards, the next three triplets that are also known as community cards are dealt with face up in the middle of the deck.

Community Cards: In order to understand the concept of the flop in a comprehensive way you must be aware of the community cards. These cards are likely found in community poker games in which the last card of the game is shared by every player. As explicit by the name these cards being exposed to the whole community of players available on the deck are given the name of community cards. As a community card is dealt face up in a poker game hence, it is also termed as a door card.

The Turn: The turn is the fourth dealt card which is also exposed in the middle of the deck as a door card.

The River: After dealing all the cards available on the deck, the river is the last card which has to be dealt with a face up in the center of the board. This is probably the last community card.

The Blinds: The blinds may seem to be a complicated term when reading about a poker game but the fact is that they symbolize the simple bets which are made during the game by the players. These bets ranges from small to big bets in which the bigger bets are twice the size of the small one’s. The reason of giving these bets the name of blinds is that a player is supposed to bet in the betting rounds without knowing about their cards.

The Call: The call is the simplest term of poker glossary. When the betting round is over the players are supposed to match any bet which has been already made by the opponent player. This matching of the bets is termed as the call.

To Fold: As it is quite explicit from its name, the fold means to discontinue playing a particular hand in the game or to quit the game as a whole. A player can fold his hand from playing any hand at a specific level.

To raise the bet: To raise the bet signifies to increase the bet which you have made in the betting round. A player can raise his bet in every next level of betting.

To check: Whereas this last basic term simply means not to bet during the poker game.

Hence, it can be concluded that once you are familiar with these basic terms, you can master the poker game. This simple poker glossary will help you to grip the command on poker language.

Raising

In poker everyone wonders how much they should raise. Everyone wants to maximize the amount of bet the other person will call. Here is a way which can enable you to decide what the optimum betting amount can be.

First of all what need to be  done is consistency in your betting. You want to keep the person confused as I mentioned in the previous article. A consistent bet does not allow the other person to judge properly if your hand is good or bad because you are doing the same thing in each case. So you have a good hand and you can’t decide what you should do.

Start to think how long have the other players been playing. Usually as the time goes on players become more open with their betting and larger bets can be made. You should also look at the chip stack of the player who is still in the hand with you. If the player has a low chip stack it is probable that the other person if they are putting in the chips have a really good hand, the same goes for the person with the higher chip stack but the lethality of their hand can be doubted.

Most of the times you should raise the amount in the pot but if you see the chances that the other person might not call a large bet then do the minimum bet on the table as to provoke the other player to raise the bet in an attempt to make you fold. Remember your POKER FACE.

When you think the other person might call an even larger bet forexample an all in then you should make the bet in an attempt to make it look like your bluffing.

Remember don’t use the same tactics every type as this would make you very predicatble.

Betting after the flop

The betting after the slop can be said to be 80% of the factual hand of a poker round. If you are sitting at a table with a mind set of playing tactfully not depending on luck, which is the way how everyone should play. Then the flop is pretty much the point where a poker hand is dictated.

You can play a flop by checking and raising. You can be in a predicament where you cannot decide if the flop is good for you or not. Forexample you have a 1 card straight waiting meaning you have the cards 6,8 in your hand and the flop opens up A,5,9.

After the flop someones raises the flop, now your in a situation where you cant decide if you should let the hand go or take the risk. Remember the saying “You gotta risk it, to get the biscuit”. That applies in poker but you can’t do that every time you are in this kind of a situation.

It helps if you know the playing style of the person who raised. Does that person bluff a lot, does he play it safe. The amount of the raise can also dictate to an extent what the hand of the opponent can be. There are exceptions to everything but mostly people do not raise more then the flop if they don’t have a good hand.

You might have to call a hand and you might loose but remember every hand you play is giving you knowledge for the future hands to come. About what you should be doing. Consistency is the key here. Some people tend to hide their hand by betting more or betting less but what they fail to realize is that every different act is giving away vital information.

You should bet the amount you normally bet, this way the other person can’t decide if you have a good hand or a bad hand. If they call you and you have a good hand then BINGO!! If you didn’t have a good hand then you get to see what the turn card is, if your hand is still lacking in power then you know that it is time to fold.

Pre-Flop Betting continued

Alright, after you have observed and taken in whatever possible from the table, now it is your turn to decide, how you are going to play your hand.

Pre-Flop is the first occasion for every hand where you give out information to your opponents about your hand. Everyone knows if you have a good hand you raise and if you have a bad hand you fold or just put in the blind to see if you get lucky on the flop or not.

The new thing here is that sometimes you just want to switch things up.Maybe you have pocket KK in your hand pre-flop… You could try and raise now, or you could lay bait and just put in the blind wait for someone else to raise. This is again the part where previous knowledge of the table comes in handy, is there being a consistent pre-flop raise? If no, then you definitely don’t want a small hand to come in just by putting the blind in and then getting lucky on the flop.

That would be a waste of your pocket KK. What you are trying to do is get someone to think that you have a weak hand, thus lead them into thinking maybe your bluffing or you just have a decent hand. Beginner and even some intermediate players would never suspect that you have pocket KK as your hand.

Vice-versa you might want to play a small hand which you got pre-flop fast paced. Meaning you raise pre-flop and let everyone think that you have a great hand ofcourse most of the time the person who is going to call you will have a great hand. If the flop opens up small, then BINGO. You know you have got them beat.

Remember poker is all about background knowledge and using that knowledge in different aspects of the game.
